Who Am I?

“God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. He wraps the rain in his thick clouds, and the clouds don’t burst with the weight. He covers the face of the moon, shrouding it with his clouds. He created the horizon when he separated the waters: he set the boundary between day and night. The foundations of heaven tremble; they shudder at his rebuke. By his power the sea grew calm. By his skill he crushed the great sea monster. His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and his power pierced the gliding serpent. These are just the beginning of all that He does, merely a whisper of his power. Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?”

Job 26:7-14

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.

Ephesians 5:8

Fear is a funny thing, isn’t it? The crippling effect it has on humans, the way it drives us to make rash decisions. I myself have fallen prey to the unforgiving grip fear tries to crush me with. And stepping into this new year, my last year as a teenager, the year I make what seems like the biggest decisions of my life, I find myself more and more fearful of what lies ahead.

A lot of people have been asking me recently who I want to be, what I want to do after I graduate from university. What they don’t realise is that I’m still stuck trying to decide which university God wants me to go to, what course He wants me to pursue. I’m still questioning my calling and seeking to understand my purpose. So when they add to the confusion by asking me who I want to be, I answer with things like a scientist, a writer, an artist. In my confusion, I cried out to the Lord, begging Him to give me clarity, to show me what He wants me to do with my life.

And the Lord spoke to me, a still small voice amidst the raging chaos of my life that instantly had all my attention. He didn’t say much, just asked me a simple question that immediately handed me all the answers I needed.

Who are you, my child?

The revelation barreled into me like a steamroller. His child. That’s who I am. Not a scientist nor a writer and neither am I an artist. I am first and foremost His daughter, the daughter of the Most High. We are all children of the Lord God Almighty.

And as I asked God what He wanted from me, from my generation in 2020, I felt the urgency of God’s desire for all of us to step into our identities as His children, to walk as children of the Light in the authority that He has given us. Because all the marvelous things stated in Job 26, they are but a WHISPER of God’s full might. And we have the power, the authority to call on God’s might to help us walk out the path that He has set for us, to fulfil His purposes. He has given us the authority to use His name because He gave us His name when He accepted us into His family and called us His children. He did so out of the perfect love that compelled Him to send His Son to die for us, looking past all our flaws to call us His own. The blood of Christ, spilled for the sake of the world who did not deserve Him, allowed us to be adopted into God’s family and as such, we now carry His name.

In 1 John 4:18, it says that perfect love casts out all fear. This comes from an understanding that as children of God, we have the authority to lean on His strength to help us in our walk. Because of that love, because of the fact that we are now a part of His family, we are His ambassadors and therefore, we have been given the authority to call forth His miracle-working power for the sake of His kingdom. And so if we have the God of Angel Armies by our side, and His might at our disposal to carry out His will, then why do we fear? Why are we so afraid to take leaps of faith in His name? The Lord’s children know no fear beyond that of reverent awe of their father.

No longer am I afraid of the question “Who are you?” because I know the answer with full certainty. I am a child of the Lord God Almighty and in Him, fear cannot touch me.
